Head of Community Engagement

Location: Bournemouth and on road

Salary: £60-£100k doe (inc bonus)

My client is a well-established, growing and successful construction company who buy and develop commercial sites across the South. Most of their work is south of the M4/M25 but they do also go further afield. A willingness to travel on a regular basis is essential. As you will be travelling you should be prepared to stay away overnight when needed.

This is a key role in the continued success of my client and will see you actively managing successful planning application outcomes. You will be responsible for leading and executing integrated multi-channel marketing, communications and sales strategies with the core focus on community stakeholder engagement to achieve planning consents.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Senior candidate who is a commercially astute, bright and engaging individual who can communicate at all levels, is experienced at tailoring your approach with different audiences, has a persuasive personality, is well presented and can listen but challenge when needed to (in the right way). It would be ideal if you were from the Construction/Property sectors but it’s not essential. You will be emotionally intelligent, be able to read situations and communicate accordingly.

You must have good marketing skills/knowledge/background and have a good understanding of business planning.

The 3 main elements to this role include: –

  • Strategic planning and communication
  • Business acumen and flexibility
  • Adaptable and flexible thinking

The successful candidate will come from or offer:-

  • Strong marketing background inc digital
  • Senior level communication skills (Linked In, Networking etc)
  • Staff management
  • Worked for Charity or similar
  • Business planning
  • Have experience in inspiring and leading a supporter campaign that has successful grown support within short deadline-driven timelines

Excellent spoken and written English is essential as is a clean driving licence and your own car. The team work hard and play hard with a fun working environment. An energetic, enthusiastic and flexible individual with a commitment to the value of community engagement and professional approach to performance is what we are looking for.

You will also have a blend of people skills, excellent project management skills and an ability to connect with the wider community, listen, gather views and feed them back to the team.

You will also have good IT knowledge (Word and Excel essential). If you have any creative experience or knowledge of Adobe then so much the better but it’s not essential.

The aim of the role is to engage with the local community around the development sites that they have purchased and are putting through planning. The success and failure of the planning application will depend a lot on the Community Engagement (CE) team and their activities.

Once a site has been bought they the CE have a pre site meeting with all internal stakeholders and then spend around 2 months researching the local area, groups, local councillors, chambers and other stakeholders that will be affected by the development. A database will then be updated by you and your team with all contact details for the relevant parties.

An introductory document is then produced and this is then hand delivered by you and the team around the local area so there is a ALOT of door knocking/cold calling at the start of a meeting – ideally you will have some experience of this or at least of sales and knockbacks. This isn’t the role for a shrinking violet! Then the extra activities start including public exhibitions, meeting with individuals (local councillors etc)!

The ultimate aim is to get through planning with limited hassle and objections.

Whilst there is no average length of time for sites you could be working on the community involvement for around 18 months – some of this will be more intense than other times so be prepared to put in the hours (will include occasional

evenings and weekends) to cover public exhibitions and meetings. You will work on a few projects at any one time so a good multi tasker is essential.

This role is really varied and challenging and presents a real opportunity for the successful candidate.
