UK unemployment fell by 63,000 to 1.96 million in the third quarter of 2014, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The fall sees the unemployment rate drop to 6%, which is the lowest rate it has been for six years.

Average earnings increased by 1.4% across the same period.

Work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan-Smith welcomed the figures and highlighted the fact that “two-thirds of the jobs created have been managerial and professional”.

Totaljobs.com website director Ian Burke said that although unemployment continues to fall, it is “at a slower pace than we’ve become accustomed to”. “While the ONS data shows the number of people in work has risen, the figures are likely to be driven in part by an increase in short-term and insecure work over the festive season,” he warned.

Accenture adding 1,600 to UK workforce Global management consulting firm Accenture has announced it will add 1,600 employees to its UK operations by August 2015.

The new roles will be spread across several locations, including London, Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The jobs range from apprentice, graduate and entry-level roles to executive opportunities across a number of areas.

The technology and digital skills arm is where the most jobs are available, with 450 new roles on offer. A number of corporate roles, including in HR, are also to be advertised in the coming months.

Olly Benzecry, Accenture’s managing director for the UK & Ireland, said the company is looking for “skilled individuals with the drive to excel in a dynamic and fast-moving environment”.

“Above all, they must share our commitment to client service as we continue to help companies across industries transform themselves for success in the new digital landscape,” he added.

“In return, we are offering people a clear, flexible career path alongside world-class training and professional development opportunities.”
