Aspire Owner completes 85 ft abseil in aid of Julias House Childrens Hospice

Aspire To Aspire

On Saturday 6th September, Helen Stacey from Aspire Jobs and her friend Claire Hudson Cooper who works as a paediatric nurse for Julia’s House along with Claire’s sister and Auntie undertook an abseil on behalf of Julia’s House from 85 ft cliffs in Portland, Dorset.

This came about after Claire decided to ask her family and friends to challenge her to 40 challenges to celebrate her 40th birthday. The catch was that whatever you challenged her you also had to complete.

Claire has already completed an Ironman competition, triathlons and a skydive as part of her challenges as well as riding all of the rollercoaster’s at Thorpe Park.

Helen comments “my dilemma was, what was I (her unfit, champagne and wine loving friend!) going to challenge her? When I casually mentioned an abseil (which I had no burning desire to do) she was so scared it made me laugh and that was it – challenge sorted”

Helen adds “it was fine until about a week before when I suddenly realised what we had let ourselves in for. On the night before I was awake from 3am and was so scared. On arrival at the cliffs in Portland we were met by the team from Julia’s House and told to put our harness and helmets on – reality really set in then watching other people jump in front of us”.

“The event was organised with Jim Oakley Adventures and he was amazing. Of our group of 4 I went 3rd. The worst part really was facing back towards Claire and putting my feet on the edge. However that wasn’t all. Once we had all completed the abseil we had to walk/climb back up the cliffs. At one point we had to use a rope to pull ourselves up through a crevice in the rocks – no one told us about that”

The fundraising total raised by Helen is at £1700 so far which “is way beyond what I ever could have imagined – people have been so generous including family, friends and clients” She added “its obvious a lot of people wanted to see me go over a cliff!!”

“I cannot thank everyone enough for their support and donations – it’s for such a worthwhile cause.”
